recently published Intel test which claimed to show that AMD's processors draw more power than an Intel equivalent.
To prove the point, Intel put a Xeon 5160 based system (2x3.0GHz, 8x1GB) up against an AMD Opteron 285 processor based system (2x285, 8x1GB).
Payet argued that the 'Intel Sponsored Results' showed "curiously high power consumption" for the AMD Opteron based system.
So AMD naturally tried the same exercise. Intel had found the Opteron drew 328 Watts at full load compared to the Xeon's 281 Watts and 273 Watts at idle compared to the Xeon's 192 Watts.
When AMD did its sums, somewhat amusingly it found that the Intel machine only drew 257 and 170 Watts respectively. So it actual used less than Intel was claiming.
However - and no surprises here - AMD found that its Opteron 2218 based system actually drew a maximum of 230 Watts and a minimum of 103 Watts.
